A Short History

Crewe swimming club was formed in 1939 moving into the Flag lane pool which had been constructed two years earlier. The club was formed as Crewe Borough swimming club and remained modestly popular during the mid 20th century even sporting a water polo arm until the late 1960s.

The club began to take its modern shape in the early 1990s when the club hired their first dedicated head coach in ex Oldham Seals coach Steve Milhench who along with wife Irene transformed the club living locally in Sandbach. They changed the name of the club to the Crewe Flyers to reflect the town links with the rail industry and the clubs logo was designed by the swimmers. After taking charge in 1991, they transformed the club in over a decade at the club turning them from a relatively minor club to one of the most respected in the region. In their first season at the club they gained promotion in both local leagues. The following year the club produced its first national swimmer Kelly Hazeldine something that they have managed to produce most years since.

A spell in the top division of the North West swimming league proved the club was moving in the right direction. Stuart Bloor earned international acclaim swimming for GB in 2006 at the 2006 paralympic world cup. After over a decade Steve and Irene retired with former Crewe swimmer taking charge, during his charge in spell the club gained two successive promotions and another spell in the Premier League of the North West swimming league and its 1st national champion in 2008 in Charlotte Bradbury.

The next few years saw first ex Stafford Apex coach Andy Mason and then ex Satellite head coach Farouk Graba steadily move the club back in the right direction ,with Farouk retiring in the summer of 2015 after over 20 years. In September 2015 ex Warrington Warriors coach and Sydney 2000 medallist Chris Pugh joined the club with the end of an era with the Flag Lane pool closing at the end of March 2016.

The club moved with confidence into the new Lifestyle centre in April 2016 hoping to emulate and surpass the excellent progress the club has made over the last few years.
