FAQ's
- So what is a swimming club, and what makes the difference between the way we
work and others who provide lessons?
A swimming club is run by its members for its members, in order to provide a well
structured programme of training and competition, and where possible, some sort
of social activities as well.
We are affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association who are the driving force
in the sport, and who encourage to develop the talents of our swimmers as far as
possible.
- Who are the people on the poolside, or at the desk, organising the paperwork?
Everyone has volunteered to help out in one capacity or another, or having started
off as a swimmer themselves or as a parent helper. The club then facilitates further
training to enable some to take further qualifications: as a coach or a teacher,
as a judge or a timekeeper.
We also need help with t he numerous clerical/administrative tasks; some people
have access to a computer, others to a photocopier. We aim to record personnel best
times and show progress overtime.
Some parents are happy supporting their children to attend regularly and fulfill
the next "step on the ladder". Others really enjoy cheering on a team
of swimmers to compete against their nearest competitors. Some might feel that they
could help to improve the way events are organised, and a few are ready to meet
the challenge of directing the children from the poolside.
For lessons we follow the ASA's National teaching plans levels and awards. We now
employ a paid coach who writes our training programmes, and can help develop swimmers
up to National level where possible.
