Gold rush sets the records straightCrewe Chronicle – 2 Apr 2003JOSEPH Wood and Abbie Henderson set new record times during the second gala of the Cheshire County Age Groups Championships.The Crewe Flyers pair touched home first to win gold in the 10 years' 100m butterfly and 100m Individual Medley respectively at Macclesfield. Joseph clocked a new championship best time of one minute 19.88 seconds in the butterfly while Abbie won the medley in 1m 21.64s. Abbie also won gold in the 100m breast-stroke while club colleague James Cow-burn won the 12 years' 100m backstroke in a national qualifying time of 1m 09.53s, and Gareth Payne won gold in the open men's 100m IM. Silvers went to Oliver Wigglesworth, Michael Sharkey and James Cowburn. Louise Thomas picked up two bronzes while Daniel Parry, Colette Foster, Sharkey, Wood and Payne also claimed bronze medals. Fourth to eighth-placed finishes were also achieved by Terry Cowburn, Daniel Parry, Louise Thomas, Michael Sharkey, Lee Hillier, Stephanie Parker, Bryony Carragher, Owen Davies, Jason Owen and Colette Foster. In addition to Gareth Payne's gold in the senior championships, Michael Sharkey finished fourth in the 100M IM. In the Junior Championships, Sharkey was second in the 100m and eighth in the 100m backstroke, while Oliver Wigglesworth was fifth in the 100m back-stroke. The following day, the event switched to the Europa Pool in Birkenhead. Abbie Henderson continued collecting gold’s, winning the 10 years' 200m breaststroke, 200m Individual Medley and 400m Individual Medley - all in record times. Gareth Payne also won gold in the open 1,500m freestyle. Louise Thomas won two silvers while Lee Hillier and Gareth Payne one each, while Louise also took one bronze as did James Cowburn. Flyers also claimed a host of fourth to eighth-placed finishes. They were: Owen Davies, Daniel Parry, Elisabeth Kilcourse, Joseph Wood, Terry Cowburn and Stephanie Parker. Gareth Payne again won a gold and silver in the senior championships, while Daniel Parry was seventh in the juniors. |
