Flyers make a splash at awards

CREWE Flyers were delighted to come second in the Club of the Year award at Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council's Mayor's Oscars on Friday.

The popular club was represented by coaches Steve and Irene Milhench at the event, at Nantwich Civic Hall.

A spokesperson said: 'This is an excellent achievement and a huge pat on the back for Steve and Irene who give up most of their time to dedicate to the swimmers. The club is building an excellent team and can go on to achieve even greater success in the coming year.'

The outstanding South Cheshire Special Needs Table Tennis Club came first in the Club of the Year section, named after the Emmie Dixon Home, and the South and East Cheshire Special Olympics Group was third.

Celia Flegg, who represents England at rhythmic gymnastics for the disabled, won the Magneta Moon Sports Personality of the Year award, while Nantwich Tennis Club chairman Sue Winters was given the Vernon Cooper award for sports achievement, after being selected to play for Great Britain veterans.

The Malcolm Case Trophy, presented in recognition of unsung heroes, was awarded to Colin Davies and Robert Beadle, of Willaston White Star football Club.

Mr Davies sadly passed away last year. His widow June joined Mr Beadle in collecting the award, handed out in recognition of their long voluntary service as grounds men at the club.

Crewe Flyers hosted the second round in the Crusader League at the weekend, finishing in fourth place.

In various events, first place swims were notched by Michael Sharkey, Charlotte Bradbury, Anthony Ryan, Rochelle Ollier (2), James Mitchell and Dale Barton.

Second place swimmers were Daniel Parry, Stephanie Parker, Toby Molyneux, Christopher Alcock, Kelly Hazeldine, Michael Sharkey, Tom Roberts and Stephanie Eastwood.

The third podium place was gained by Laura Gray, Kelly Hazeldine, Alexandra Parker, Abigail Axon, Charlotte Bradbury, Jason Hodgson, Sarah Oliver, Russell Gibbons and Stephanie Parker.

The boys U10s relay team scooped wins in the freestyle and medley events. Crewe Flyers excelled in the North Midland Championships, which took place over the last two weekends at Biddulph and Macclesfield.

Butterfly star Lauren Sinclair (two gold’s overall), and backstroke swimmer Michael Eastwood (eight gold’s overall) both achieved national qualifying times.

Other gold’s, in various events, were won by Elliot Bloor (5), Joseph Wood (4), Colette Foster (2), Stephanie Eastwood (2), Charlotte Bradbury, Bethany Mayer, Emma Kinsey, Abigail Axon, Abbie Henderson and Daniel Carragher.

Silver medallists were Daniel Carragher (4), Stephanie Eastwood (4), Colette Foster (3), Michael Eastwood (2), Elliot Bloor (2), Joseph Wood (2), Laura Gray, Tony Molyneux, Lauren Sinclair, Bethany Mayer, Casey Davidson, Abigail Axon and Stephanie Parker.

Bronze medallists were Austin Barton (3), Joseph Wood (3), Elliot Bloor (2), Rebecca Small (2), Bethany Mayer (2), Bryony Carragher (2), Tony Molyneux, Rochelle Oliver, Lauren Gray, Charlotte Bradbury, Lauren Sinclair, Michael Eastwood, Lisa McKenna, Daniel Carragher and Stephanie Parker.

Other placings went to - Fourths: Daniel Carragher 2, Daniel Parry 2, Stephanie Parker 2, Amy Buckley, Colette Foster, Joseph Wood. Fifths: Lauren Sinclair, Amy Buckley, Christopher Alcock, Stephanie Eastwood, Stephanie Parker. Sixths: Amy Buckley, Colette Foster, Joseph Wood, Christopher Alcock, Stephanie Parker. Sevenths: Lauren Sinclair, Rebecca Small, Joseph Wood, Daniel Carragher, Jason Owen, Daniel Parry. Eighths: Bethany Mayer, Rebecca Small, Lauren Sinclair, Casey Davidson, Joseph Wood, Stephanie Eastwood, Stephanie Parker, Daniel Parry.

Six swimmers also took British Age Group category awards. Lauren Sinclair and Elliot Bloor were second in the 10 years' group, Daniel Carragher third in the 14 years, Colette Foster fifth in the 12, Joseph Wood eighth in the 12 years and Rebecca Small 10th in the 11 years.
