Golden boy Elliott defies odds to land medal
Feb 20 2008 Crewe Chronicle The 13-year-old was selected to swim in the Inter-County Junior Invitation Gala at Fenton. But illness laid the teenager low in the run-up to the event and sparked fears that – having missed 10 days of training – he may have had to pull out. Now he is celebrating after digging deep to produce a magnificent win in the 100m Butterfly for Cheshire. His Flyers coach, Ian Spencer, said: “I am delighted that Elliott’s performances were recognised once again. “There is a lot of competition for places and it is a great honour to be selected for what is one of the strongest counties in the UK.“And for him to win gold against swimmers from five other county teams, having not swum for 10 days prior to the competition due to illness, makes it all the more impressive.”
The Flyers finished in fourth place overall after hosting round one of the Crusader
League. But with many of their swimmers debutantes, Spencer was pleased.
He added: “I was excited to see so many swimmers competing in their first
team gala. Although the team finished fourth on the night, many of the races were
very close and this bodes extremely well for the future.”
Flyers swimmers making their debuts were Abi Bedson, Stuart Eastwood, Grace Farr,
Aaron Glover, Conner Grayson, Beth Moore and Beth Po |
